Down Home Girl
Label: Nettwerk Records
Folding banjos into songs about cocaine and Karl Rove, OCMS manage to mix down-home traditional with the modern world. There is plenty of rousing fingerpicking to be had here ("Minglewood Blues"), along with high lonesome harmonicas and old-timey sing-alongs, plus the best dust off of a labor anthem ("Union Maid" by Woody Guthrie) since Billy Bragg's adaptation of "There is Power in a Union." Produced by David Rawlings (who also helped out as songwriter), Big Iron World is folksy revival tent goodness for today.
