Lindberg: EXPO - Piano Concerto No. 2 - Al largo
Magnus Lindberg served three seasons as composer-in-residence in New York; this recording collects three of his major pieces for Alan Gilbert's orchestra. "Expo" is a lush curtain-raiser, full of spectral-influenced texture. But the big item is Lindberg's new three-movement piano concerto (Yefim Bronfman is the elite soloist). More romantically inclined than Lindberg's first piano concerto, but still boasting lots of his idiosyncratic flourishes, it shows how much his language has advanced. "Al Largo," an essay for orchestra, completes this worthy document of the composer's time in America.
