Let's clear up a few things. First, it wasn't cosmic American hipster Gram Parsons or the ahead-of-their-time Byrds who turned mainstream America on to country rock; it was the Eagles. Second, they didn't suck. They were fantastic (especially when Bernie Leadon was around). For their debut album, the Eagles studied their influences before honing a sound that is obscenely catchy and as uniquely identifiable as a fingerprint. Sure, Glenn Frey comes off like a bell-bottomed stoner on "Chug All Night" and "Most of Us Are Sad." But hey, this is sunshiny road-tripping music, not existential poetry.
