Child Of The Seventies
Label: Rhino Atlantic
Bettye LaVette had been cutting singles since she was 16 years old, but this Muscle Shoals-recorded wonder was her first actual album. LaVette's peerless R&B vocals become one with the powerfully written material -- it sounds like she is creating the narratives and melodies on the spot. The gut-wrenching "Your Turn to Cry" was released as a single, but Atlantic Records pulled the plug on promotion and canceled LaVette's national tour. Maybe she wasn't marketable at the time, but the music endures. This edition includes a bevy of bonus material from both phases of LaVette's Atlantic tenure.
