Under The Sign Of The Black Mark
Label: Black Mark
Bathory continued their monstrous effect on metal with this third album, released in 1987. At times, the album practically exposes the Norwegian scene as straight-up Quorthon imitators. One can almost see Darkthrone guitarist Nocturno Culto's jaw dropping when the choruses of "Woman of Dark Desires" and "Equimanthorn" spit forth. On the other side of the world, Obituary gurgler John Tardy was presumably flipping out over "Call from the Grave," as Quorthon trades eternally damned screams with himself. The beginnings of Viking metal appear in "Enter the Eternal Fire."
